WASHINGTON (NEXSTAR) – Ukraine is searching through the rubble of a children’s hospital in Kyiv, one of several targets Russian missiles hit Monday that left more than 30 dead and 100 injured across Ukraine.

The major missile attack comes on the eve of the NATO summit in Washington, where leaders say supporting Ukraine is the top priority.

“In Ukraine, Russia continues its brutal war,” NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said.

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg met with U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin ahead of this week’s NATO summit in Washington.

“At the summit we will make decisions to further strengthen our support to Ukraine,” Stoltenberg said.

Ukraine isn’t currently part of NATO, but the White House says the summit will bring the country closer to joining the 32-member military alliance.

“You’re going to see, as I alluded to, some discussion about Ukraine’s path to NATO,” National Security Council Spokesperson John Kirby said.

Kirby says the focus at the summit is on helping Ukraine win the war and defeat Putin.

“If he thinks he can outlast the coalition of countries supporting Ukraine, he’s dead wrong,” Kirby said about Putin.

Focus will also be on President Joe Biden’s performance at a press conference during the summit. It comes as calls grow within his own party for him to step down from seeking another term.

Kirby says he’s not heard from any allies that they’re concerned about the president.

“We’re not picking up any signs of that from allies at all, quite the contrary. The conversations we’re having with them in advance is that they’re excited about this summit,” Kirby said.

The summit starts Tuesday.

President Biden will take questions from reporters and meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Thursday.
