MILWAUKEE (WNCN) – North Carolina Lt. Governor Mark Robinson spoke at night one of the Republican National Convention, letting delegates and everyone at home know he is running for office too.

“I stand before you on the verge of becoming the first Black governor of North Carolina,” Robinson said.

In his less than four-minute speech, Robinson spoke about his own upbringing in Greensboro and why he believes former President Donald Trump should be president again.

“As governor I will not forget where I came from, or the struggles of the people I meet, and, you know, there’s someone else who will fight just as hard for you, President Donald J. Trump,” Robinson said.

Robinson was also front and center when the state’s delegates voted for Trump, announcing the votes on behalf of North Carolina’s delegation.

Will the convention spotlight impact the Governor’s race? CBS 17 asked that to Western Carolina University Political Science Professor Chris Cooper.

“This is a golden fundraising opportunity for Mark Robinson,” Cooper said.

He said the eyeballs of Republican donors across the country could benefit Robinson.

“Now, I don’t think there’s going to be too many more North Carolinians sitting on their couch saying Robinson, Stein, let me watch the RNC and try to find out my answer, but it could mobilize some voters,” Cooper said.

Robinson is running against current NC Attorney General Josh Stein. His campaign’s spokeswoman Morgan Hopkins sent CBS 17 the following statement in response to Robinson’s speech:

“This November, voters will have an incredibly stark choice between two competing visions — Josh Stein’s is forward-looking and inclusive while Mark Robinson’s is divisive, hateful and all about fighting job-killing culture wars. Josh Stein is committed to building a safer, stronger North Carolina.”

Dory MacMillan with President Joe Biden’s campaign sent the following statement to CBS 17 in response to Robinson’s speech:

“Under Donald Trump, North Carolina lost nearly 9,000 manufacturing jobs, and once Joe Biden was elected, he helped bring our state back, overseeing the creation of more than 400,000 new jobs, including 12,400 manufacturing jobs, since taking office. Mark Robinson and Trump are pushing the same extreme MAGA agenda to rip away our rights, our health care, and our access to the good-paying jobs President Biden created.”
