NHC tracking 3 tropical systems, including Tropical Storm Kirk. Could any impact Texas?

Hurricane activity has picked up after a brief lull in August, with three named storms forming since Helene's landfall, which resulted in at least 128 deaths, with hundreds still missing.

Hurricane Isaac and Tropical Storm Joyce developed in the open Atlantic without making landfall or posing significant threats, and now Tropical Storm Kirk is following a similar path.

Meanwhile, two new systems remain active, both with moderate chances of developing in the coming week.

This surge in storms comes as forecasters warn of a potentially record-breaking hurricane season, with 17 to 24 named storms expected, of which eight to 13 could become hurricanes. In comparison, an average year sees 14 named storms, including seven hurricanes.

This year, the 2024 Atlantic hurricane season has already brought 11 named storms, of which six have become hurricanes.

  • Disturbance 2: A system located a few hundred miles south-southwest of the Cabo Verde Islands is expected to form this week as it slowly moves westward over the eastern tropical Atlantic. Formation chances are 80% in the next 48 hours and 90% in the next seven days.

Hurricane tracker: Are any hurricanes heading to Texas?

While both of the emerging disturbances have a good chance of developing within the next week, it is still too early to determine whether they will affect Texas.

Hurricane Kirk will have no impact toward any land.

When does hurricane season end?

Hurricane season is June 1 to Nov. 30, although storms can emerge earlier or later than average.
