Norfolk airport travelers part of estimated record breaking 4th of July travel weekend
NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — Millions of people were expected to fly home Sunday after 4th of July weekend.
The TSA predicted it would be the busiest day ever for air travel, as they expected to screen more than three million people.
Sunday night, Norfolk International Airport was relatively calm although airport staff told 10 On Your Side that the atmosphere was a lot more chaotic earlier in the day.
We spoke with some of those travelers.
“We were here for the 4th of July. We stayed in Williamsburg, and we went to where? We go to Washington, D.C. We went to Yorktown. We went to the water park and the Busch Gardens, and we went to the Water Country,” Luke Unrein said as he and his family headed back to Phoenix, Arizona.
His wife Michelle said they were expecting the airport to be busy.
“We were worried about that the way here. There were no delays, but we’re delayed right now. So, we’ll see if we can get on,” she said.
Traveler Robert Standley also commented on the travel atmosphere that night.
“Ticket prices were much higher today, but it’s worked out better in my schedule. But, you know, Norfolk’s a real easy airport to fly into and out of,” Standley said.
He said he got to the airport early to avoid any stress.
“If it’s like a Monday through Thursday type of day, I will get here like an hour prior and just breeze through. But today, because I knew was Sunday heavy travel day, I got here a few hours. I got here about an hour and 45 minutes before my flight.”
