KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) announced that the north and southbound lanes of Interstate 29 (I-29) through St. Joseph, Mo. closed Tuesday at 4 a.m. due to construction.

According to MoDOT, the lanes will reopen on Friday by 4 a.m. after the existing deck is demolished, new beams are installed, and the girders of the Cook Road Bridge are painted.

The 72-hour closure will lead to traffic being directed to the same signed detour on I-229 that was used earlier in July.

MoDOT said southbound I-29 traffic must exit at I-29, I-229, and U.S. Route 71 (Exit 56B), and northbound traffic must exit at I-229 and I-29 (Exit 43).

Local traffic will not be able to utilize I-29 at these locations, according to MoDOT:

Northbound I-29 from:
Route 6 (Frederick Blvd.) – Exit 47
U.S. Route 36 – northbound Exits 46A & 46B

Southbound I-29 from:
Business Route 71/US. Route 59 – Exit 53
U.S. Route 169 (Rochester Rd) – Exit 50

The construction on the Cook Creek Bridge aims to widen the bridge, replace the driving surface, add a pedestrian sidewalk to the south side of the bridge, and add a decorative railing and concrete sides.
