Northern lights visible again in High Desert

High Desert stargazers were in for a treat over the weekend as the aurora borealis, also known as the Northern lights, made an appearance.

Big Bear-based Meteorologist Ben Brissey took to social media to share a photo and to say, “the Northern lights are once again visible from portions of Southern California. This is addition to the peak of the Perseids Meteor shower tonight.”

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration predicted Friday that solar activity could reach high enough levels to make the auroras visible in certain regions of the U.S.

The storm watch that the agency's Space Weather Prediction Center issued over the weekend largely coincided with when the Perseid meteor shower would be peaking.

Forbes shared the following aurora borealis facts:

  • The aurora borealis forecast for Sunday night into Monday morning has a Kp index range of 3.33 and 5.67, meaning the lights are expected to become brighter and “be quite pleasing to look at” if you are in the right place, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

  • A geomagnetic storm watch is in place through Sunday following an eruption of solar material on Wednesday and Thursday, meaning people in some northern and upper Midwest states may be able to see the lights.

  • The lights may be visible alongside the Perseid meteor shower, which is expected to peak between Sunday night and Monday morning, as well.

In May, the Northern lights were visible in much of the U.S., including the High Desert of Southern California.
