OAKLAND, Calif. (KRON) — The Oakland Alameda Water Shuttle indefinitely suspended its services on its long-awaited opening day on Wednesday. It will be out of service “until further notice,” the City of Alameda said.

San Francisco Bay Services, the parent company of the East Bay shuttle, said it needed to “unfortunately” suspend its service due to mechanical issues at about 6 p.m.

San Francisco Bay Ferry provided a statement to KRON4 on Thursday:

“During service Wednesday evening, crews noticed damage above the water line on the vessel dedicated to the Oakland Alameda Water Shuttle route. The captain suspended service immediately. Welders repaired the vessel overnight, completing work at 4 AM Thursday. We will provide service updates following U.S. Coast Guard inspection of the repairs. The shuttle will remain suspended until that point.”

Alameda residents who spoke with KRON4 on Wednesday morning said they were “thrilled” for the boat to be introduced.

“We are so excited to those excited to ride it,” SF Bay Services said on X, formerly known as Twitter.

The free shuttle was slated to run from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday through Sunday.
