Oconee Blotter: Man calls 911 to report drunk wife driving off in U-Haul van

The Oconee County Sheriff’s Office reported the following incidents:

WRECK PROBED: On July 10, Deputy Seth McCart was dispatched to a wreck at the corner of Hog Mountain Road and Lane Creek Drive. A 59-year-old Monroe man driving a large truck for a tree service said he was turning into a private driveway when an approaching Honda Accord made an erratic lane change and hit the side of his truck. The 33-year-old man driving the Honda said he attempted to pass the truck because he was in a hurry. No one was injured, but the Honda driver was taken to jail due to not having a driver’s license and his vehicle registration was expired.

WOMAN ARRESTED: On July 10, Deputy Doug Mattocks was dispatched to a hit and run after a 62-year-old man called to report his wife was drunk and had hit his pickup as she left their home. She was driving a U-Haul van northbound on U.S. Highway 441 near Bishop. Mattocks spotted the van as it neared the Golden Pantry. He activated his emergency equipment, but she didn’t stop. Cpl. Lex Ogan also responded and stopped midway in the highway. However, she drove around him, but she did stop at a nearby BP station. The 61-year-old woman denied hitting the pickup, but said it was her truck anyway. The deputy noted she smelled of alcohol, slurred her speech and had red eyes. She admitted to drinking one Bud Light beer and later said she also had a “shot.” She was taken for a blood-alcohol test and read 0.24. She was charged with DUI.

DISORDERLY MAN: On July 13, Deputy Dylan Pulliam was dispatched to check on a man seen taking mail from boxes along U.S. Highway 441 near Spartan Lane. He spotted the man near Lavista Road. The officer stopped and approached the man who said, “Get the (expletive) out of my face.” The man denied stealing anything, but tried to leave while the officer attempted to question him further. The man resisted the officer’s effort to put him in handcuffs, which eventually led to him being immobilized with a stun gun. The 33-year-old Marietta man was taken to jail on an obstruction charge.

DUI CHARGED: On July 13, Deputy William Reynolds was parked at the Waffle House on Epps Bridge Parkway working a traffic case. He observed a yellow Nissan Sentra attempting to back into a parking space, then he heard a woman loudly shout, “You hit my car. You’re drunk.” The two drivers swapped information and the officer spoke to the Nissan driver, who was sweating and had glassy eyes. The 24-year-old Lawrenceville man explained he had left a party and had stopped at the restaurant to eat with friends. The man didn’t reply when asked if he had been drinking and he also declined doing any sobriety tests. He explained he was “in a bit of an inebriated state and needed some time to drive better.”  The officer then placed him under arrest. The man agreed to a blood test and was taken to a hospital before a trip to a jail cell.

One chair was valued at $8.98 and the other at $75. He scanned the cheaper chair twice. Also, he did not scan a drinking pitcher and a mini-vacuum cleaner. He also grabbed a bag of ice on his way out of the store. The 62-year-old resident of Bogart was taken to jail on the theft charge.
