ODU students, police react to armed robbery on campus, suspect still at large
NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — Students living in the Scotland House dorm on the Old Dominion campus had a scary situation unfold Tuesday morning as university police responded to calls of an armed robbery.
“It was pretty scary, just knowing that there was someone in our building,” one student Maggie Metz said.

University police responded to the report of the armed robbery at the dorm at 2:38 a.m.
“As they were arriving to go check on those inside, they observed a vehicle leaving the area at a high rate of speed,” Old Dominion University Police Chief Garrett Shelton said.
The officers followed the vehicle and stopped the driver, 25-year-old Sekai Hughley, and took him into custody.
Hughley faces four counts of armed robbery, four counts of brandishing a firearm, four counts of using a firearm in the commission of felony and one count of carrying a loaded firearm into certain localities: extended magazine.
The other two suspects ran away, one of them 20-year-old Quincy Banks, who was later taken into custody. Banks faces four counts of armed robbery and four counts of use of a firearm in the commission of felony.
The individual pictured below, police said, still remains at large:
“We can’t do it alone and we need everybody’s help,” Shelton said, “and if you see something that again makes you feel uncomfortable or doesn’t look right, call us.”
Shelton said thankfully no one was hurt, but it is alarming to see a crime like this on ODU’s campus.
“Typically, we deal with incidents like this well off of our campus within our concurrent jurisdiction,” he said.
How the three got inside the building is still under investigation. Students believe it’s possible they slipped in behind someone.
“It’s just kind of crazy that they got in,” said Old Dominion student Damien Howie.
Police advise students and staff to stay alert as the investigation continues.
“Usually, we have our doors unlocked going in and out of each others room, but now we can’t do that,” Metz said. “We don’t want to risk anything because that could’ve been a dangerous situation.”
Shelton said they will continue to monitor this situation, as student safety remains a top priority.
