Officials suspend search for missing kayaker, reopen Sessions Lake

LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) — After nearly five days of searching, the Ionia County Sheriff’s Department is suspending its search for a missing kayaker on Sessions Lake due to the search effort’s lack of success and difficult conditions out on the lake.

Officials say they will resume operations when they have the resources to expand the search.

Sessions Park Lake will reopen Thursday evening and remain open through the weekend.

On Sunday, at around 7 p.m. rescue teams responded to Sessions Lake after law enforcement received a report of a kayaker who had flipped his kayak over on the water and not resurfaced. Deputies learned that the missing man, mid-30s from Grand Rapids, and his girlfriend had removed their life jackets due to being uncomfortable.

Rescue crews found the man’s life jacket, but the last time the man was seen was at 6:57 p.m. Sunday. Officials are not releasing his name at this time.
