The Department of Homeland Security and Department of Justice briefed Congress Wednesday on the assassination attempt of former President Donald Trump as House hearings plan to start next week.

The Republican controlled House of Representatives is set to start hearings on the assassination attempt on Monday. The House Oversight Committee is set to question Secret Service officials. Two Ohio lawmakers, Reps. Jim Jordan, R-Urbana, and Mike Turner, R-Dayton sit on the panel.

Lawmakers are calling for Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle to resign.

"She needs fired," Turner told Bloomberg Television from the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee. Turner chairs the House Intelligence Committee.

House Speaker Mike Johnson told Fox News on Wednesday the House will have a task force to also investigate. The House Judiciary Committee, which Jordan chairs, is also planning hearings starting Wednesday. The panel is calling in FBI Director Christopher Wray to testify.

On Thursday, Jordan posted on X that whisteblowers had come forward saying the Secret Service was understaffed.

Here's what other Ohio representatives had to say after the Wednesday briefing:

Rep. Brad Wenstrup, R-Hillsboro

Wenstrup said in a statement that during the briefing it was clear there was a failure in security for Trump.

"The American people deserve honesty and clarity on what went wrong. I know our country can heal from the dangerous, political, betrayal and violence tearing sections of our country apart," he said.

Rep. Bob Latta, R-Bowling Green

“The United States Secret Service work hard every day to protect the President and other high ranking government officials. While we commend their hard work, a lapse in security – like the one that occurred at President Trump’s rally in Butler, Pennsylvania – should have never occurred. We need answers, and the American people deserve to hear them, too,” he said.

Rep. Troy Balderson, R-Zanesville

Balderson said Congress will thoroughly investigate the assassination attempt to ensure it never happens again,

“We need answers about what happened at President Trump’s rally on Saturday and the security failures that led to the fatal shooting. This should have never happened, and the American people deserve answers immediately," he said.
