Two days after an assassination attempt on his life in Pennsylvania, former President Donald Trump on Monday accepted his party's nomination for president and selected Ohio Sen. J.D. Vance to be his 2024 vice presidential running mate at the 2024 Republican National Convention.

"I have decided that the person best suited to assume the position of vice president of the United States is Senator J.D. Vance of the great state of Ohio," Trump posted on Truth Social.

During the announcement, Trump lauded Vance's military service and business experience as well as his commitment to American workers in Ohio, Pennsylvania, Michigan, Wisconsion, and elsewhere.

Ohio State University reacts to Vance pick

In a statement to The Columbus Dispatch, Benjamin Johnson, spokesperson for Ohio State University, congratulated Vance on his selection.

"Senator J.D. Vance is an Ohio State alum, a native Ohioan and a dedicated public servant, exemplifying the university motto 'Education for Citizenship.' Ohio State congratulates him on his selection to be the Republican vice-presidential nominee," Johnson said in an email.

'Exciting prospect': Columbus Republican Doug Preisse reacts

Doug Preisse, former chairman for the Franklin County Republican Party who now serves as a ward officer for the organization in Columbus, said Monday that the selection of Vance is an exciting prospect and adds another dimension to the presidential race.

"Ohio has been reliably red for the past few election cycles, but this adds a lot more enthusiasm and excitement to the race," said Preisse. "(Vance's selection) will have reverberations across the ticket."

Preisse also pointed out that the last time Ohio had a Republican vice president was in 1925 with the election of Charles Dawes, who served as vice president under Calvin Coolidge from 1925 to 1929.
