One dead in Riverton officer-involved shooting

RIVERTON, Utah (ABC4) — One person is dead after a field sobriety test went awry in Riverton on Friday, according to Riverton Police.

Shortly after midnight on July 5, police received reports of a hit-and-run crash involving a side-by-side near the Riverton City Park.

An officer responded to the scene, found the side-by-side, and conducted a traffic stop.

Upon pulling the individual over, the officer suspected that alcohol was involved, and decided to have the driver undergo a field sobriety test.

During the sobriety test, the driver reportedly became highly aggressive. The officer then fired his weapon, killing the suspect.

Salt Lake City Police are conducting an investigation into this incident, as is standard with the Officer-Involved Critical Incident Protocol.
