In One Ear: Big Red blues

Well, Big Red, aka the Net Loft, at 100 31st St., is still up for sale, by Christy Coulombe of Saltaire Coastal Homes in Gearhart. The only notable difference in the offering is that the price has dropped from $225,000 to $200,000.

“Originally built by the Union Fisherman’s Cooperative Packing Co. in 1897 as a way to free themselves from the canneries’ low price fixing,” the description says. “This building was used by the co-op to repair and store fishing nets and boats. Today, it stands as the last testament to Astoria’s rich fishing heritage.

“In more recent years, this historic site has nurtured the arts community, offering artists large studio spaces with natural light, high ceilings and awe-inspiring 360-degree water views, unlike any other in the Pacific Northwest. Building use is by waterway lease through the Oregon Department of State Lands.” The listing is accompanied by eye-popping photos.

The 19,600 square-foot building sits on a 2.51-acre lot, has no heat or water, and the sewer is described as “other.” Also, the 2007 Great Coastal Gale inflicted significant damage.

However, on the bright side, aside from the spectacular views, the real estate taxes are only $152 a year.

Also, Big Red’s possibilities are evident in its sister building to the east, Alderbrook Station, which has been historically registered and lovingly restored to its former beauty. (Photo: Saltaire Coastal Homes)
