One year later: APD asks for tips in 2022 murder case. Has it been solved?

AUSTIN (KXAN) — The family of D’andre Day said fatigue is settling in as the investigation into the 2022 murder continues, despite 365 days passing since the Austin Police Department put out the first public request for help finding his killers.

According to police, Day, 27, was stabbed during the early morning hours at the intersection of East Sixth and Brazos streets on Sept. 4, 2022.

Surveillance footage showed three men approach Day and a friend. APD said a fight broke out during which one of the men stabbed Day, who died from his injuries shortly after.

APD said the motive behind the stabbing is unknown and that it’s unlikely that Day knew his attackers.

Day’s family joins APD in request for help to solve his murder

“What was taken from us was joy. If you walked up and saw D’Andre and talked to him, I guarantee in two minutes you’d be laughing. That’s the kind of kid he was,” Day’s uncle Rodney Anderson said at a press conference at APD headquarters in July 2023.

Anderson and APD investigators made a public demand for tips into the homicide. Debuting close-ups of the possible suspects and surveillance footage.

Despite that request and tearful testimony from Anderson, there are still no arrests in this case.

Two weeks ago, APD released more surveillance footage from that night, including a closer look at three possible suspects and three possible witnesses.

Day’s uncle says grief continues into second year of investigation

“Time makes everything a little bit better you know, but it’s still been a challenge with the family. Always the memories, the July Fourths” Anderson said.

Sitting at his kitchen counter a year since the press conference with APD, Anderson recounted the emotional journey the last two years have been for his family.

He said the grief is still there for the family but especially so for Anderson’s sister who is D’andre’s mother.

Anderson said it’s saddening that there’s been seemingly little movement in the case, but is hopeful that justice will be served.

“I’d like to see some arrest. That’s number one thing because it gives a family a little bit of closure,” Anderson said.

Anyone with information is asked to call the APD homicide tip line at 512-974-TIPS. The detective noted there is a $1,000 reward through Crime Stoppers if someone can help police make an arrest.
