IT outage still impacting flights at Tampa International Airport

TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — Flight cancellations and delays continued Saturday as airlines worked to recover from a global IT outage that caused turbulence at Tampa International Airport.

“My cousin from Houston is already home, my cousin from Maryland already at home, so it depends on your airline,” traveler Eric Black said.

Southwest flight heading for Tampa diverted to Fort Lauderdale after descending to 150 feet

His family was told to buckle up for the long wait ahead. They said due to the outage, they won’t be taking off for days.

“Our flight was supposed to leave at 6, it was pushed back to 7:34 then pushed back to 8:33, then an attendant from Delta told us, well it probably won’t leave out of here for two to three days,” Black said.

CrowdStrike, a cyber security technology company, said what happened Friday was not due to a cyber-attack. The software issue has since been fixed, but for others, it could take longer to get things back up and running.

What is CrowdStrike, the company whose faulty update caused widespread outages?

“I did not have another night on my hotel stay, I did not have anywhere else to go, Detroit is home. I am missing family, so we will get there whenever we get there,” said traveler Alyssa Welch.

The tech issue paralyzed airlines, banks and more. Travelers at TPA said they are feeling the ripple effect of the disruption.

“It is very frustrating, you don’t have much assistance because you have to call a number to get a refund,” Black said.

Airport officials are asking for people to check with their airline before they arrive at the airport for the most up-to-date information on their flight status.
