Palm Beach Police remind drivers: Blocking intersections can result in tickets
Palm Beach officials are pleading with drivers: Stop blocking intersections — or risk getting a ticket that could include a fine or points on your driver's license.
The Police Department sent a notice to residents on Tuesday to remember not to "block the box," an alliterative reminder that it is illegal to obstruct an intersection.
As Palm Beach Police officers have worked to help alleviate the congestion throughout the island, the department said they have noticed that one of the most-seen bad behaviors is "blocking of the box."
"This occurs when a driver enters an intersection or 'box' or passes over a crosswalk without room to proceed through the intersection before the light turns red," the department said. "Blocking the box prohibits oncoming traffic from moving and creates dangerous conditions for other drivers, motorists, and first responders."
The Police Department also reminded drivers in Palm Beach to stay patient and be mindful of slowing traffic.
"Everyone will eventually get where they are going, but honking horns, illegal and aggressive passing, and merging will not make you or traffic move faster," the department said in its alert to residents.
The town has worked for months on strategies to help ease congestion, which was a serious concern for residents last season and has only gotten worse because of an influx of visitors and residents, along with the closure of South Ocean Boulevard next to President-elect Donald Trump's Mar-a-Lago Club when he is home, officials have said.
