Part of this major road in Columbus will close temporarily. Here’s how it affects you

Part of a major road in Columbus temporarily will be closed for three nights this weekend.

Interstate 185 northbound and southbound will be closed at Exit 4 (Buena Vista Road) each night May 10-12 to demolish the former overpass, the Columbus Consolidated Government announced in a news release. The exit will be closed during the following times:

  • 9 p.m. May 10 through 9 a.m. May 11

  • 9 p.m. May 11 through 9 a.m. May 12

  • 9 p.m. May 12 through 5 a.m. May 13.

This temporary closure is part of the Georgia Department of Transportation’s $47 million project to build a wider bridge and construct what is called a diverging diamond interchange, a modern design that is supposed to improve traffic flow and reduce chances for crashes.

Only the stretch of I-185 between the on-ramps and off-ramps at Exit 4 will be closed during those periods, CCG assistant engineering director Vance Beck told the Ledger-Enquirer. Traffic along Buena Vista Road, which has been using the new bridge over I-185, won’t be affected, GDOT spokeswoman Penny Brooks told the L-E.
