Parts of I-55 closed due to downed power lines in Will County; may take 24 hours to cleanup

CHANNAHON, Ill. — Interstate 55 is closed in both directions between U.S. 6 and River Road Tuesday due to downed power lines, according to the Illinois Department of Transportation.

Severe weather slammed Illinois Monday evening, including across the Chicago area, causing extensive damage in some parts.

Northbound traffic on I-55 in Will County is being diverted at River Road, southbound at U.S. 6.

IDOT reports that ComEd is handling the situation and estimates another 24 hours to repair and cleanup.

Motorists can expect delays and should allow extra time for trips through this area.

Multiple tornadoes were reported along the line of Monday night’s storms that moved through Chicagoland, according to the National Weather Service, which planned to survey a number of areas following the reports.
