Boil water notice lifted from Bellefonte, Spring Township. Here’s what we know

Two days after a boil water notice was first issued for parts of Bellefonte Borough and Spring Township, the notice has finally been lifted.

The notice was initially issued Wednesday for all customers of Bellefonte Borough Water Authority, due to a low chlorine reading. Because water companies typically add chlorine to kill disease-causing germs such as salmonella, not having enough of the disinfectant raised the risk of the water containing disease-causing organisms associated with “diarrhea, nausea, cramps and associated headaches.”

After tests involving the chlorine levels were confirmed as safe Friday, and following approval from the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection, the boil water notice was formally lifted at 3:40 p.m. Friday.

Bellefonte Borough Manager Ralph Stewart told the CDT earlier on Friday that test results were expected by Friday afternoon. And that timetable proved accurate.

The borough’s automated system alerted residents of the lifted notice via their cell phones, and the borough website also confirmed the lifted notice.
