Paterson burglary spree targets Hondas for steering wheels, air bags, hubcaps

PATERSON — Burglars broke into 12 Hondas parked in the city's normally low-crime Hillcrest, Riverside, and South Paterson neighborhoods two nights this week, stealing steering wheels, air bags and hubcaps.

Law enforcement officials issued “extra attention” bulletins about the burglaries on Tuesday and Wednesday telling city cops “to be on the lookout for any suspicious activities." Investigators have not identified any possible suspects, according to the bulletins.

The burglaries hit five Civics, five Accords, and two CRVs, according to the police alerts.

The Hillcrest crimes in the 2nd Ward happened early Monday morning on Arlington, Emerson, Crosby, and Chatham avenues, police said.

The Riverside neighborhood burglaries in the 3rd Ward took place early Tuesday on East 24th Street, 4th Avenue, and at the corner of East 22nd Street and 8th Avenue.

Three 6th Ward South Paterson break-ins occurred Monday on Crooks and Maryland avenues and Park Street and on Tuesday on Maryland Avenue, according to the bulletins.

Al Abdelaziz, the 6th ward councilman, said he was aware of the rash of Honda burglaries in South Paterson. "I want to assure residents that law enforcement is actively investigating these incidents," he said. "We encourage residents to keep an eye out for any suspicious activity and report it to the authorities immediately."
