PD: Man arrested for shooting, injuring woman in Las Cruces

EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — A man has been arrested for a shooting that injured a woman in Las Cruces this past Saturday, June 15, according to Las Cruces Police.

Police say Christian Nieto Cervantes, 19, is charged with felony counts of shooting at a house or dwelling, aggravated residential burglary, and aggravated assault.

Cervantes also faces three misdemeanor counts of failure to appear.

Police say at around 10:30 p.m. on Saturday, police were dispatched to the 1900 block of West Picacho Avenue about shots fired at an apartment located in the area.

Police say they arrived and learned that Cervantes discharged several rounds into an apartment.

Court documents obtained by KTSM say Cervantes initially fired a shotgun at the front door of an apartment and then entered the apartment.

Cervantes pointed the shotgun at a 36-year-old woman and said that he was looking for a stolen vehicle, according to court documents.

Court documents say Cervantes continued to fire the shotgun several times inside the apartment and then fled the area in a black SUV.

The woman suffered minor injuries and received medical attention at the scene after she was able to jump out of a rear window. No other injuries have been reported.

According to court documents, Cervantes told police that he went with another man and his uncle to locate his uncle’s stolen truck.

Cervantes told police that they went to an unknown apartment where “subjects took out firearms and began to fight, then he ran from the scene,” according to court documents.

Court documents also say that Cervantes’ story kept changing.

Cervantes’ uncle also told police that his truck was stolen and that Cervantes went to look for it, according to court documents.

Police say they located Cervantes Sunday morning, June 16, and arrested him. Police also recovered a shotgun in his possession.

Cervantes was booked into the Dona Ana County Detention Center where he is initially being held without bond.
