Wilson Police said they were called to the 2200 block of Forest Street for a gunshot victim. There, a 33-year-old woman said she had been shot in the back by a three-year-old child.

She was taken to an area hospital for emergency surgery and is expected to survive.

Witnesses told police that Brian Siegfried, 41, of Williams Township, had been handling a handgun on the front porch of the home. He cocked the gun, placed it on a table, and walked away, witnesses told police.

Siegfried told police he was tired of holding the weapon and put it down.

Several children under the age of five were nearby and a three-year-old picked up the gun and accidentally shot the victim. The child who fired the weapon was not injured.
