Person dies after falling at St. Mary’s Glacier

DENVER (KDVR) — One person died after rescue crews said they fell at St. Mary’s Glacier near Idaho Springs.

According to the Alpine Rescue Team, crews were notified at 2:20 p.m. on Thursday about a person who was stranded on a cliff band above St. Mary’s Lake.

Originally, the Alpine Rescue Team crews said the situation was a non-emergent response, but as 25 members climbed the route, it was determined that the person had fallen and was unresponsive. The situation was then upgraded to emergent, and Flight for Life Colorado responded.

The rescue team said crews climbed to the person who was pronounced dead. According to the Alpine Rescue Team, crews completed a technical evacuation and brought the person down.

At this time, it is unclear what led to the person’s fall.

Clear Creek EMS, Clear Creek Fire, the Clear Creek Sheriff’s Office and Jeffcom 911 all assisted.

The identity of the deceased person has not been released as of Friday morning.

St. Mary’s Glacier is a popular hiking area as visitors get to explore a semi-permanent snowfield. While All Trails said the hike is considered moderate, snow and ice can cause slick conditions for some.
