PHOTOS: Large greenspace, urban park to be built in downtown KC

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Kansas City officials announced on Wednesday that construction has started in the heart of downtown for a new, “arts-focused” greenspace and parking garage.

The new Barney Allis Plaza and Garage is a completely re-imagined, street-level plaza where people can attend community-wide events, enjoy sitting under covered pavilions, play with their dogs in the designated dog park and spend time with their families in the play areas.

Here are the specific plan descriptions listed on the Barney Allis Plaza website:

  • An event plaza, a paved space on the south end of Barney Allis Plaza (just outside Municipal Auditorium and the Kansas City Convention Center) for large events, pop-up festivals and more.

  • A sloped lawn, boasting terraces and views onto the event plaza.

  • A pavilion plaza, intended to host food trucks and other pop-up events, as well as a variety of artwork throughout the space.

  • An oval lawn, offering a flat and flexible green space for casual events and informal gatherings.

The plaza will also feature a parking garage for approximately 580 vehicles, with an upgraded infrastructure surrounding it. These additions are expected to create a “massive draw” for business-goers, tourists and conventions hosted in Kansas City.

The project is led by the City and McCownGordon Construct, HOK and other stakeholders, and it aims to turn the space into a vibrant addition to the city that not only serves as a place of refuge for Kansas Citians but also a symbolic reminder of the metro’s desire for innovation.

The ground-breaking event (no pun intended) started at 10:30 Wednesday morning and featured guest speakers like Mayor Quinton Lucas, 4th District Councilmen Eric Bunch and Crispin Rea, City Manager Brian Platt, Senior Vice President of McCown Gordon Construction Chris Vaeth, and Ralph Oropeza with the Greater Kansas City Building Trades Council.

The upcoming redevelopment project is scheduled to finish around the summer of 2026.
