At around 4:50 p.m. on July 20, Salt Lake City Fire requested the help of Salt Lake City Police to notify community members about evacuations and traffic control due to the fire. SLCPD officers reportedly went door-to-door making sure the public knew about the evacuation zones.

“To help ensure the safety of firefighters, and to allow for quick access for incoming fire units, officers shut down several roads, including East Capitol Boulevard, North Bonneville Road, and City Creek Canyon Road,” a release from SLCPD states. “Officers will continue blocking all access to the evacuation zones. Those who do not live in the evacuation zones will not be permitted to pass.”

The wildfire, located just above the Utah State Capitol building in Salt Lake City, quickly proved to be an emergency situation on Saturday, with the Capitol building opened as an evacuation shelter.

Officers also evacuated and closed Memory Grove Park to allow firefighters to access water amid the blaze.

The SLCPD on-duty incident commander reportedly requested the help of all available on-duty officers during the incident.

“The Salt Lake City Police Department recognizes all the first responders from throughout the region who assisted with this rapidly unfolding situation.”
