Pima County corrections officer's body recovered from Patagonia Lake

Authorities recovered the body of a Pima County Sheriff's Department corrections officer on Thursday at Patagonia Lake, officials confirmed.

On Wednesday around 7:30 p.m., reports from the lake about 30 minutes north of Nogales indicated a man went underwater but never resurfaced, according to Michelle Thompson, spokesperson for Arizona State Parks.

On Thursday at about 9:40 a.m., deputies with the Santa Cruz County Sheriff's Office recovered a body from the lake, according to Thomspon.

The body was identified as 20-year-old Brayan Torres, according to Pima County Sheriff's Deputy Adam Schoonover.

Torres had been a Pima County Corrections officer for just over a year, according to Schoonover.

The search and rescue effort were headed by Santa Cruz County Sheriff's office, with assistance from Cochise County Sheriff's Office, Patagonia Fire Department and Rio Rico Fire District, according to Thompson.

Thompson did not have details on the circumstances of Torres's death but noted the lake had active restrictions in place on where swimming was allowed.

Thompson said there had been unrelated instances where people attempted to swim the entire length of the lake and suffered the consequences of varying water depth and dangerous conditions.

"It's a lot of lake to swim across if you're not particularly a strong swimmer. There's no lifeguard," Thompson said.

The Santa Cruz County Sheriff's Office did not immediately respond to The Republic's request for more information.
