Plane hit road sign before crashing near I-25

DENVER (KDVR) — A plane flying near Larkspur Sunday morning hit a sign on Interstate 25 and eventually crashed in a field east of the roadway, according to preliminary information from the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office.

Two people were taken to a local hospital after the crash.

The Federal Aviation Administration told FOX31 that the plane, a Tecnam P2006T, crashed around 7:50 a.m. Two people were on board the plane.

According to the sheriff’s office, both of them were taken to a local hospital with unknown injuries.

Emergency crews had to wade through waist-deep water to get to them. They were out of the plane when deputies got to them.

A small fuel leak was being taken care of, the sheriff’s office said.

Plane crash causes traffic backup on I-25

Two lanes of northbound I-25 were closed for several hours following the plane crash, but they were reopened sometime after noon.

While the road was closed, traffic was backed up.

“I came in here around 11, it wasn’t too bad when I came through but then kind of when I was setting up tables, traffic throughout the town started backing up both ways. It’s pretty much bumper to bumper for two hours,” Larkspur Pizzeria employee Nate Lumay told FOX31.

The Renaissance Festival was happening in Larkspur this weekend too.

“This is our busiest day of the year we have; the Renaissance Festival is just that way. It’s kind of what Larkspur is known for and kind of where we get all of our money from,” Lumay said.

The National Transportation Safety Board will be in charge of the investigation.
