LANSING - Seven young people were shot and a teenager is dead after a shooting early Monday morning on Riverfront Drive, police said.

The incident is the latest shooting in a violent two months for Lansing. After having no homicides in the first three months of the year, the city has had eight in April and May, according to Lansing police.

No arrests had been made in the Riverfront Drive shootings Monday morning. The shooting "is believed to be an isolated incident," police said. The investigation is ongoing, they added.

Several dozen yellow evidence tags were visible on the pavement at the scene after 7 a.m. Monday morning and police were still at the scene.

In the most recent homicide before Monday morning, Cynthia Marek, 65, was pronounced dead at a hospital after officers responded about 7 p.m. Friday to the 2100 block of Bruce Avenue, just north of Interstate 496 and west of the Capitol, and found her with “substantial injuries,” Lansing police said. Police haven't said how she was killed, but the Lansing Fire Department also responded at about the same time as police did to Bruce Avenue for a report of two stabbing victims, one who died, the department said.

Three people have been charged in connection with the death of Zacarri Marquise Taylor, 25, of Battle Creek on May 12 in Lansing. His dismembered body was found on Malcolm X Street, hours after a fight involving "multiple suspects." Police have said they are searching for additional suspects in Taylor's death.

Police have yet to announce an arrest in the fatal shooting of a 14-year-old boy early in May on the city's west side. Lansing police Chief Ellery Sosebee said investigators have a person of interest in that case and were still gathering information.

In a late April incident, police and prosecutors say Dennis Whaley shot and killed two people - a woman he had previously assaulted months earlier - and another man in a Lansing home in April. Although Lansing police obtained a warrant for domestic assault for Whaley on Jan. 4 in connection with an assault on the woman last fall, he was never arrested before the killings.

Anyone with information about the most recent shooting is asked to contact the Lansing Police Department at 483-4600 ext. 5 or Crime Stoppers at 483-7867. They can also send a private message through the Lansing Police Department's Facebook page.
