Police: Elmira man arrested, threw Molotov cocktail near child

ELMIRA, N.Y. (WETM) — An Elmira man was arrested after police say he broke into a home and threw a Molotov cocktail into a room a child was sitting in.

Tamilselven Thangadurai, 42, was arrested early on Saturday morning after police investigated a reported arson. According to the Elmira Police Department, Thangadurai forcefully entered a home on the 400 block of West Fourth Street shortly before 10 p.m. on July 26 and threw a Molotov Cocktail at the living room wall. An 8-year-old child was sitting on the couch when Thangaduri allegedly broke in and threw the incendiary device.

Police say that part of the wall and floor caught on fire. The resident and their neighbors quickly put out the fire and then called the police. No one was injured in the fire. The Elmira Police Department, the Elmira Fire Department, and New York State Fire Investigators started investigating the reported arson that night.

Later that night at about 2 a.m., people who were talking to Thangaduari near Walnut Street and West Second Street flagged down Elmira Police Officers. They told the officers that Thangaduari was making concerning comments.

Officers took Thangaduari into custody and found two Molotov cocktails hidden in his jacket. He was then charged with first-degree burglary and second-degree arson, both of which are class B felonies. Thangaduari is being held at the Elmira Police Department while awaiting arraignment.
