Police ID Orange County man shot in confrontation with deputies at gas station

The Orange County Sheriff’s Office on Monday identified a man shot in a confrontation with deputies at a Michigan Avenue gas station on July 16.

Stuart Anthony Hyatt, 33, was the suspect, according to a sheriff’s office news release. He was charged with attempted carjacking, aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer, battery and criminal mischief.

This is the first time law enforcement has confirmed Hyatt survived the shooting. The last update on his condition, included in the agency’s initial press release on the day of the incident, was that he was in surgery.

Deputies responded to Chevron station at 901 W. Michigan St. shortly before noon on the 16th after Hyatt crashed his vehicle into another, according to the department’s initial release. Hyatt reportedly punched someone in the face and broke the window of another person’s truck before attempting to hijack it and crashing it into the station’s gas pumps.

The Sheriff’s Office said he was holding a metal rod when deputies arrived and ignored their instructions before running at them with it. A deputy attempted to shock him with a Taser, but it appeared to have no effect. Two deputies then shot the him. He was given first aid before being transported to a hospital. No deputies were injured.

In a news conference after last week’s shooting, Sheriff John Mina said he viewed body-camera footage of the incident and said it looked to him like Hyatt was in some form of crisis or on drugs.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating and will turn over findings to the State Attorney’s Office for review, according to the press release.

The Sheriff’s Office will conduct its own internal investigation after FDLE’s review is complete. The deputies that fired their weapons are on temporary paid administrative leave pending the FDLE review.
