WASHINGTON (DC News Now) — The Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) announced in the hours following a shooting at a rally for former President Donald Trump that they were increasing police presence across the District.

In a statement issued late Saturday night, MPD said it was working with local, state and federal law enforcement partners to monitor the events that took place earlier in the day in Butler, Pa. There, shots had been fired at a Trump rally.

Two people had been killed, including the suspected gunman. Two spectators had also been critically injured.

Trump’s ear was covered in blood from what he said was a gunshot. He had been quickly pulled away by Secret Service agents and his campaign reported that he was safe.

Chief Pamela A. Smith was briefed by federal law enforcement partners and continuously received updates about the situation. She had also briefed D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser on situational updates as they developed.
