Man kills woman, injures her son before taking his own life in Gables apartment, police say

In a murder suicide in a Coral Gables apartment Thursday morning near Gables High, a man shot and killed the woman he was living with and seriously wounded her 20-year-son before killing himself, police said.

The shooting happened around 10 a.m. inside one of the apartments at the Gables Ponce building at 310 Granello Ave. in Coral Gables, said Detective Argemis Colome, a Miami-Dade police spokesman.

The building is a few blocks from Coral Gables Senior High, 450 Bird Road, which was locked down temporarily Thursday morning and has since reopened, a school district official said.

The dead are a 61-year-old man, Matthew Vincent Roll, and a 41-year-old woman, Lusine Melikynan, who were involved in a domestic romantic relationship, Detective Andre Martin, a Miami-Dade police spokesman, told reporters at the scene. The wounded man is 20 years old and the woman’s son, he added.

Police have not named any of those involved. Coral Gables police were the first to arrive; the investigation is being handled by Miami-Dade police.

Doctors at Jackson South Hospital performed “life-saving surgery’’ on the 20-year-old, named by police Friday as Suren Mkrtchyan, and he was in critical but stable condition as of Friday afternoon, Martin said. He called 911.

It was not immediately known whether the man and woman who were killed were married, Martin said.

Liz Swanson said she’s lived at Gables Ponce for about two years. She was running errands at the time of the shooting and came home to a crime scene.

“It’s shocking. It’s upsetting, of course. It’s sad,” she said.

Swanson said the complex is a mixture of young adults or senior citizens, with few families living there.

“It’s something you don’t want to hear, especially where you live,” she said.

Melanie Pohl and Damion Haywood, both 22, are University of Miami students and say many of the residents are as well. “But, a lot have moved out for the summer,” Pohl said.

Pohl has lived there for four years, and said the area is very safe and quiet. “We were never concerned about even the possibility of gun violence at the very least,” she said.

Haywood said in the year that he has lived in Ponce Gables, “I don’t think I’ve ever seen even any minor crimes, like packages being stolen or a car break-in.”
