Police: Palm Bay woman is killed in domestic incident that led to shootout with officers
A Palm Bay woman was killed Friday morning in a domestic incident that led to a shootout between a man and officers, police said.
When Palm Bay police arrived at the scene near the 200 block of Jefferson Avenue after receiving a “suspicious incident” call, they heard a gunshot within the home, according to a statement from police officials.
Joseph Fleming, 29, emerged from the home and engaged in gunfire with officers, said Palm Bay police chief Mario Augello. Fleming fled around neighboring homes, but was located, with injuries, by the Brevard County Aviation Unit after "an extensive search," according to officials.
He was transported by life flight to a local hospital and was in critical condition Friday afternoon.
The name and age of the female killed, and her relationship to Fleming, were not released Friday.
Fleming hs an “extensive” criminal record, Angello said, including armed home invasion, kidnapping and robbery.
No officers were injured during the shooting, though three officers were placed on paid administrative leave as is protocol for officer-involved shootings, Augello said.
“I couldn’t be prouder for what they did this morning,” he said of the officers. “They took an oath to protect and serve the citizens of this community … They did that this morning.”
