Political analysts: Unity is the biggest challenge among Democrats

WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) – While the Republicans are showing a united front, Democrats are divided. Several are calling on President Joe Biden to step aside because they are concerned about his health and mental fitness.

Despite a COVID-19 diagnosis, Biden says he is not going anywhere. KSN’s political analyst says if he does, Democrats already know who they want to replace him.

“I think there is a growing national consensus behind the vice president as the likely replacement for Joe Biden,” said KSN Political Analyst Jeffrey Jarman.

What happens if Biden drops out of presidential race?

Some expect the bid to shift to Vice President Kamala Harris, but political analysts say either candidate will face an uphill battle.

“The challenge she, and frankly any other candidate, will face right now is how to unify the party and move forward with a very small window to try to beat Donald Trump in the fall because they’ve given themselves the smallest possible window to do that,” said Jarman.

Jarman says the Democrats’ big challenge will be getting everyone on the same page with less than four months until the election.

Democrats at the highest levels are pushing for Biden to reconsider his election bid. Representative Adam Schiff is the highest-profile Democrat to publicly call on Biden to drop his bid, and Montana’s Jon Tester is the second Democratic senator to do so.

The Associated Press even reported that Representative Nancy Peloci and former President Barack Obama expressed concerns about Biden privately.

Here are the Democrats who could replace Biden on the ticket

The Biden for President campaign called an all-staff meeting Friday.

“I think the real challenge is for Biden to make a quick decision so that the party can determine how it wants to go forward in selecting a new nominee. There is very little time, but we are also in a moment where all the attention will be focused on the two nominees. It’s certainly not too late if the democrats want to make a change,” said Jarman.

The Democratic National Party is planning to have a virtual vote on Aug. 7 before the DNC starts on Aug. 19.
