A popular Atlanta cheesesteak restaurant is planning a location in this Columbia district

A popular Atlanta restaurant known for its cheesesteaks is planning a location in one of Columbia’ most popular nightlife and retail districts.

Big Dave’s Cheesesteaks, which currently has locations in Atlanta and Charlotte, plans to open a spot in the 900 block of Harden Street in Five Points, next door to Teriyaki Madness. It would be the first South Carolina location for Big Dave’s.

“Big Dave’s Cheesesteaks Columbia, South Carolina is coming soon!!!,” the business said in a recent post on the company’s Instagram page, noting the business would be in Five Points.

As reported in a February story in restaurant industry publication QSR Magazine, franchisees Marc Brown and Frank Williams III inked a deal to bring five Big Dave’s Cheesesteaks restaurants to South Carolina, with Columbia, Greenville and Spartanburg being eyed as potential sites.

An opening date for the Five Points Big Dave’s has not been publicly announced, but restaurant officials note it could still come in 2024.

“It’s official, we will be bringing @BigDavesCheesesteaks to Five Points in Columbia, SC later this year!!,” Brown said on Instagram. “Best cheesesteaks in SC, and don’t sleep on the cheesesteak egg rolls.”

Several new businesses have opened in the last couple of years at The Treadwell, a strip of businesses in the 900 block of Harden Street on the upper end of Five Points. Commercial entities there include The Flying Biscuit breakfast and brunch spot, Teriyaki Madness Japanese restaurant, Spectrum cable and internet offices, and an Orangetheory fitness gym, among others.

Big Dave’s Cheesesteaks was founded by Derrick Hayes, who named the restaurant after his late father. A Philadelphia native who relocated to Atlanta, Hayes opened the first Big Dave’s in a gas station in Dunwoody, Georgia. It later spread to several other locations across the Atlanta area, and a Charlotte outpost opened earlier this year.
