Port Huron Police to increase security at schools after shooting threat spreads online
The Port Huron Police Department said it will step up security at schools in the area after receiving reports of a threat of a school shooting.
The police department announced online that it believes the threat is not credible.
"As of now, it is believed this threat is a hoax but due to the nature of this threat, you may notice an increased police presence at schools across our district tomorrow and the coming days," the police department said in a Facebook post. "This is a precautionary measure, and we do not want you to be alarmed. Your safety, and the safety of our students and school staff, remains our top priority."
A notice from Michigan State Police shared by the Port Huron Police Department reported various threats to schools across North America had reportedly been found circulating on social media websites including Instagram and TikTok.
"Given the mass distribution combined with the added on-screen text seen in these screenshots, we are confident this is a spam Snapchat image," the notice states.
Anyone with information about a direct threat to Port Huron Schools is asked to call 911 immediately.
