86-year-old man fatally hit by car while crossing road in Niles

NILES, Ill. — An investigation is underway after a pedestrian was fatally struck by a car while crossing a street in Niles on Sunday morning.

According to the Niles Police Department, the deadly crash occurred at the intersection of North Milwaukee Avenue and North Maryland Street, near Golf Mill Shopping Center, at around 8:30 a.m.

Officials later confirmed that the victim, an 86-year-old man, who has been identified as Yalda D. Shabou, was walking from west to east across Milwaukee Avenue. Investigators said on Monday that video from the scene shows Shabou tripped and fell into the southeast bound curb lane of Milwaukee Avenue. He was then struck by a southeast bound vehicle driven by a 66-year-old man that was traveling through a green light on Church Street.

Fire officials transported the victim to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead at 9:05 a.m.

Police said the driver of the vehicle remained at the scene after the crash. No citations have been issued.

Due to the crash, authorities shut down Milwaukee Avenue in both directions between Maryland Street and Church Street.
