Magnitude 4.1 quake strikes south of Bakersfield: USGS

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — A magnitude 4.1 earthquake struck in an area south of Bakersfield on Monday afternoon, according to the US Geological Survey.

The quake struck at around 3:30 p.m. and was centered in an area 8.5 miles northwest of Mettler, according to data from the USGS. The quake’s depth was measured at 11.3 km — or about 7 miles.

There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries but there were reports of shaking felt in Shafter, Bakersfield, Pine Mountain Club and Arvin.

Following the quake at 3:30 p.m. more than a dozen smaller earthquakes were recorded in the surrounding area according to the US Geological Survey. A map from the USGS showed there were 16 earthquakes recorded in the hours following the initial quake.

The strongest quake was a 3.5 magnitude centered about 14.5 miles southwest of Lamont just after 6 p.m.
