For the first time ever, Los Angeles is celebrating Pride Month by flying the iconic rainbow flag over City Hall.

The L.A. City Council approved a notion on Friday to allow for a flag, other than the American flag, to be raised on a government building.

Announced by L.A. Mayor Karen Bass on Saturday, the Pride Flag will now fly over City Hall for the entirety of June’s Pride Month in celebration of the LGBTQIA+ community.

“I’m proud to have signed this historic motion to fly the pride flag over City Hall. Our message to the rest of the country and to the world is clear – now more than ever, we must stand together,” Bass said. “We know the harm that discrimination and hate brings and I’m proud that in Los Angeles, we accept our LGBTQIA+ community with open arms.”

The Pride Month celebrations in Southern California kick off this weekend with the annual WeHo Pride Parade on Sunday. The parade starts at 12:30 p.m.

KTLA is the official broadcast partner of the WeHo Pride Parade. Live coverage begins at 1 p.m. on KTLA 5, KTLA+ and KTLA.com. Viewers can also watch the broadcast on KTLA’s Facebook page and YouTube channel.
