You Probably Don't Need IMDb for the Most Popular IMDb Searches

The subscription "Pro" service of invaluable time-wasting device IMDb, which lists the cast and production crew of every movie and TV show you can (and can't) name, is turning ten years old this year. As part of the celebration they've announced the ten most searched actors, movies, and television shows on the site. The results are... sadly unsurprising?

Isn't that all sort of dismayingly uncreative? Angelina Jolie? Twilight? Grey's Anatomy? Why aren't most people searching, say, Denise Crosby, trying to figure out whatever happened to Tasha Yar? Where is The New Adventures of Pippi Longstocking, search to find out if Tommy turned out cute? These are the important IMDb searches that America should be doing, not Johnny Depp or Glee.

It is funny, and actually surprising, that something like Donnie Darko made it so high, or that The Godfather ranks for some reason. In Donnie Darko's case it's probably because the movie hit big (in an underground college dorm cult way) right when IMDb did, so the two just fed unendingly off of one another. But The Godfather? Who is looking up The Godfather? Folks, we really should know, as a culture, who is in The Godfather by heart by now. Like, everyone who knows anything about movies knows it's Ray Liotta, Edie Falco, and Billy Crystal as the shrink. Right?

Anyway, there you have it. Looking into the future, it's rather insane that the G.I. Joe sequel is trending higher than both The Avengers and The Hunger Games, fated to be two of 2012's biggest movies, but what can you do. The public wants to know about what the public wants to know about. Maybe they're just checking to see if Joseph Gordon-Levitt's in the second one too. If so, well, uh, one of those searches is ours.
