What is listeria? What are its symptoms, treatment?

Listeria monocytogenes is a type of bacteria that can cause listeriosis, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Listeria can cause an intestinal illness resulting in vomiting and diarrhea. The bacteria can also spread beyond the intestines, causing fever, muscle aches and fatigue, headaches, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance or seizures.

The intestinal illness usually improves without treatment. The more invasive illness is usually treated with antibiotics.

Consumers who have consumed the affected product and are experiencing symptoms should seek medical attention.
