Prom Promise: Showing high school students the risks of drunk driving
NEW RICHMOND, WV (WVNS) – Prom season is here for some and right around the corner for many. High school students are preparing for the best night of their high school career, but risks are still a factor for those who are driving to and from prom.
With many students driving to their high school prom, the sad reality is that drinking and driving is a possibility.

According to Shatterproof, “41 percent of teens age 16 to 19 said they’d most likely drink or use drugs on prom night.”
To bring awareness to this issue, Wyoming East High School hosted ‘Prom Promise’.
A simulated car wreck was shown to students to bring attention to the risks of drunk-driving.
Carlee Lane, Student and Organizer of ‘Prom Promise’, said showing the risks to students is better than telling them.
“Every kid makes unsmart decisions sometimes. So, if they see this, it kind of shows them what could happen. Which I think is really important. It’s all visual. You can sit there and tell a kid all day that ‘this is what’s gonna happen if you drink and drive.’ If you show it to them, show them how real it is, then they usually take it better that way,” said Lane.
Fire Fighters, EMS, and police were on the scene to make this simulation look as real as possible.

Lane said she hopes ‘Prom Promise’ makes a generational effect.
“I’m hoping that they’re able to take this into their future and pass it on to their kids and their kids. When they stopped cause of COVID, I just wanted to get the ball rolling again because it’s proven to help,” said Lane to 59News.
Students were lined up behind the simulated crash witnessing the possible effects of drunk driving. The hope is that this event not only brings awareness to the issue, but opens their eyes to real risks with drinking and driving.
