A Publix is opening in a Miami building where a penthouse condo sells for $5 million

Publix has confirmed plans to open a new supermarket in a luxury waterfront residential-retail complex coming to a causeway that connects between Miami and Miami Beach.

The starting price for a penthouse condo is $3.1 million and the highest-priced one will be $5.3 million, said Claudia Gonzales Moreno, a spokeswoman from Levy Public Relations on behalf of Shoma Bay.

The Publix, a 35,037-square-foot store, smaller than other new ones opening around the state, will anchor the condo tower at 1850 John F. Kennedy Causeway in North Bay Village, Publix spokeswoman Lindsey Willis said.

She said it’s too early to estimate when the store will open or the amenities inside and outside.

The Kennedy Causeway, also known as the 79th Street Causeway, connects Miami with Miami Beach through North Bay Village, a bayfront municipality with single-family homes, condo towers and restaurants.

Shoma Bay, a luxury property coming to North Bay Village at 1850 John F. Kennedy Causeway, will be anchored by a 35,000-square-foot Publix. The store and residences have a tentative 2026 opening target.

The mixed-use Shoma Bay project is not the only major project underway in North Bay Village.

In June, the Continuum Company announced its partnership with entertainment company, Palm Tree Crew, and detailed plans for the nearby Shuckers Waterfront Grill & Hotel. The groups plan to build a waterfront hotel, restaurant and dock slips where Shuckers Waterfront Grill & Hotel sits. This development is planned to happen after the new year.

The Shoma Bay condo along Biscayne Bay, meanwhile, will feature a resident lounge and bar, a spa (and even one for pets), a golf simulator, a two-story fitness center, a theater room, a wine cellar and a cigar lounge, along with an expansive 6,030-square-foot pool deck, offering panoramic views of Biscayne Bay.

In addition to the Publix, there will be 15,628 square feet devoted to retail space. Tenants, aside from Publix, have not been identified yet.

The North Bay Village site is also boasting a rooftop lounge but that feature is not a part of the Publix, Willis said.

Publix also is planning a waterfront location in Hollywood “with boat access,” Willis said. “It will also have a seating area inside the store and there will be multiple levels for parking.”

The Hollywood store on the Intracoastal has been in the works since 2018 and is now under construction. Willis said the Lakeland-based grocery chain will have more details on the Hollywood store later this month.

And Publix also has opened a supermarket in another luxury building, a condo-hotel complex on Young Circle in downtown Hollywood.

Publix Florida openings

As customers look forward to the coming waterfront stores, Publix has a couple of new Florida locations set to open sooner:

On June 13, Publix opened a 46,791-square foot supermarket, with an attached liquor store, at The Shops at Big Bend in Apollo Beach in Hillsborough County.

Another store of the same size is set for Aug. 15 in Jacksonville at Plaza at Normandy. This Publix will also have a liquor store.
