Pueblo woman arrested for allegedly shooting teen; victim is second juvenile shot this week

A 19-year-old woman has been arrested for first-degree assault, domestic violence, and violation of a protection order after allegedly shooting and critically injuring a 17-year-old Wednesday

Pueblo police say they were notified around 1 p.m. that a teenage victim had arrived at a nearby hospital in critical condition with a gunshot wound. They learned that the victim was possibly shot at a residence in the 2400 block of Lake Avenue where they responded and attempted to contact the suspect, Mariah Jaramillo.

A standoff with police ensued, according to the Pueblo Police Department, and the Pueblo PD SWAT Team responded to the scene to assist in contacting Jaramillo.

The standoff was resolved when Jaramillo surrendered to police and was taken into custody peacefully, according to Capt. Dustin Taylor, a spokesperson for Pueblo PD.

Taylor stated that police believe the shooter had "some kind of relationship" with the victim.

The juvenile victim remained in "serious condition" at the hospital on Thursday, according to a Pueblo PD news release.

Jaramillo is being held at the Pueblo County jail without bail, pending a court appearance.

Anyone who witnessed the incident or has additional information is encouraged by Pueblo PD to contact Detective Danelle Romero at 719-601-7820. To remain anonymous, contact Pueblo Crime Stoppers at 719-542-STOP (719-542-7687) or submit a tip online at pueblocrimestoppers.com. Information that leads to a felony arrest could qualify its submitting party for a cash reward.

Wednesday shooting marks second Pueblo juvenile shot since Sunday

Wednesday's incident marked the second juvenile shooting in Pueblo in just three days. On July 7, a juvenile was shot and injured while attempting to retrieve a stolen bicycle alongside their father.

The father and child had observed the allegedly stolen bicycle in front of a residence, and the father confronted the residents about the bicycle, at which point a "disturbance" ensued.

"The juvenile was struck by a bullet," police officials said. "Thankfully, the bullet decelerated enough to cause only minor injuries. In an abundance of caution, the child was transported to a local area hospital for treatment and will be released."

The Pueblo PD SWAT Team was also activated in that matter to assist with a barricaded subject at the residence.

Taylor stated Thursday that police are still investigating the July 7 incident and do not yet have any more information on the matter.
