Quincy man sentenced to rehab for probation violations in shooting case

HILLSDALE — A Quincy man convicted of a drive-by shooting in Osseo in January 2023 was back in the 1st Judicial Circuit Court Monday for sentencing on a number of probation violations.

Matthew Christopher Mosby, 31, pleaded guilty to attempted discharge of a firearm causing serious bodily impairment on March 20, 2023, and was sentenced to 12 months in the Hillsdale County Jail with three years felony probation.

This summer, Mosby was arrested for and pleaded guilty to a number of probation violations since his release from jail.

On Monday, Mosby’s probation was continued and he was sentenced to time served for the violations. Mosby was also ordered to attend and complete Hope House programming for substance abuse disorder.

Mosby was initially charged in January 2023 with attempted murder but entered into a plea bargain with the Hillsdale County Prosecutor's Office who dismissed that charge in exchange to his plea to the lesser charge on March 20, 2023.

He shed light into the case during his plea hearing and said that the victim — Ryan Hoose, 25, of Hillsdale — had threatened to “hot shot” him in the past. Mosby clarified that a “hot shot” was a lethal dose of fentanyl injected intravenously.

Mosby said that on the night of Jan. 4, 2023, he was at his twins’ grandparents house in Osseo for their birthday party and that when he left he noticed Hoose, who was dating the children’s mother, parked at the end of the road.

That’s when Mosby turned around.

“I realized it was him and I turned around to try and get wifi to let my kids’ grandparents know,” Mosby said. “He’s not supposed to be there.”

Hoose noticed Mosby turn around and began chasing him, Mosby said.

The chase made its way out of Osseo where Hoose allegedly attempted to run Mosby’s vehicle off the road. That’s when Mosby grabbed his .300 blackout AR pistol and fired two shots.

One round penetrated the driver's side door of Hoose’s vehicle, went through his leg, and lodged in the passenger seat, according to police.

After the shooting, Mosby said he panicked and drove to his dad’s house where he left the firearm on his bed before his dad drove him to his girlfriend’s house in Bronson where the Michigan State Police Emergency Response Team apprehended him in the twilight hours of the following morning.

The AR pistol was recovered by police and Hoose was treated and eventually released from the hospital.
