Rain should clear out in time for Red, White & Boom, but here's what happens if it doesn't

Current National Weather Service radar indicates those attending Red, White & Boom fireworks show tonight along the Scioto River in downtown Columbus should expect rain — possibly heavy at times — from a line of scattered storms moving through between 5 and 9 p.m.

The rain may be welcome relief to some, knocking down afternoon high temperatures in the low 90s and a heat index or "feels-like" temperature in the mid- to upper-90s that triggered a heat advisory for Franklin County and other counties in Ohio until 8 p.m.

The rain is expected to clear out in time for the designated Red, White & Boom fireworks showtime at 10 p.m. But what happens if it doesn't?

Organizers say efforts will be made to launch the 25-minute show by midnight. If weather still does not permit, the fireworks show would then be cancelled.

"We really play it by ear on event day. We have the ability to delay the parade; we can run it as late as 7 p.m.," said Shawn Verhoff, co-executive director of Red White & Boom. "As long as it's not lightning, we can run the fireworks."
