(WFXR) — Congressman Bob Good reiterated his intention to file for a recount Tuesday after the 5th District Republican Primary election results were certified.

There are only 374 votes between incumbent Rep. Good and opponent State Senator John McGuire, well within the margins for a recount.

“It doesn’t surprise me,” McGuire told WFXR Tuesday. “He’s been saying he’s going to do it and it’s his right. I think statistically in Virginia history it doesn’t move the vote more than a few votes.”

WFXR News asked Good’s campaign for an interview, but they did not respond.

Aaron S. Van Allen, Associate Professor at Liberty University’s Helm School of Government, says calls for a recount will play well with Good’s supporters.

“It’s something that is going to play well with his base as far as them seeing him as a fighter. It plays well into this message that he has that this is just another example of the swamp trying to steal an election,” he said.

However, he says McGuire and Trump supporters won’t see the recount as fondly. Trump endorsed McGuire in the race.

“They’re going to say he just needs to roll over, that he lost the election, and that he needs to find some other capacity in order to support President Trump,” said Van Allen.

The .6% difference between Good’s and McGuire’s vote counts means Good will have to foot the bill for the recount himself.
