It’s official: unrestrained presidential power

Somerset, N.J.: Recently, the Supreme Court has made some important rulings, but not in the interest of the citizens of America. One ruling gives the sitting president immunity for official acts performed while in office. This is troubling, now and down the line.

Ex-President Donald Trump’s lawyers are all over this, and will try to revisit the Stormy Daniels case. That was not an official act, it was someone running scared who tried to divert attention from what he was actually doing. He made the choice to engage with Daniels, then didn’t want voters to know about it.

The Mar-a-Lago episode was even worse. He took classified documents from the White House and, when caught, refused to give them back — meanwhile, displaying them in a bathroom where some documents were falling out of open boxes. Others were housed on an insecure stage. This was not an official act.

Trying to overturn the presidential election was not an official act, it was a deliberate attempt to stay in power even though he lost. The Jan. 6 insurrection was the worst thing I ever witnessed. Trump motivated his followers to attack the Capitol and our democracy. He claims people were ushered in by the police, however, that is far from the truth. More than 100 police officers were injured that day, and several died as a result. The mob wanted to attack the speaker of the House and kill the vice president. That definitely could not be an official act. Eileen M. Foti

Bringing the house down

Bronx: Ruling that Trump is above the law doesn’t make him a king, because kings no longer have that kind of power. It makes him a dictator, and destroys all that our democracy is supposed to stand for. All the cackling and debating back and forth can’t change that fact. We should not be willing to accept this or allow ourselves to be brainwashed in this way. It has happened before, with dire consequences. It’s about power, the kind achieved by mobsters and dictators. They would not be there without our help. We, the people, should not be intimidated by lies or allow ourselves to be deluded. Let’s not be hypocrites. We claim we want one thing, then go out of our way to block it. Antonia Cruz

Compassionate cat ladies

Brooklyn: Vice presidential wannabe J.D. Vance has gone on record saying our country is “effectively run… by a bunch of childless cat ladies.” As a proud member of that demographic who is by no means “miserable,” as Vance alleges, I only wish that were true. If our society was run by the kind of people who rescue, foster and adopt animals, we would see human beings in need treated with much greater compassion and support. People would be given more financial, psychological and health care resources to bounce back from challenges like drug addiction, domestic abuse and homelessness. The fact that Vance sneers at “cat ladies” should make every animal lover shudder at the idea of a second Trump administration, where social support systems for human beings will be eviscerated. Check their records

Brooklyn: So, Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, aka Mad Marge, strikes again! Bad enough she’s blaming the Democrats for the DT hit, but also claims they’re the party of pedophiles. Nope — wrong again, as usual. It’s the GOP, as that stands for Grand Old Pedophiles, as exemplified by the likes of Ratpublicans Mark Foley, Dennis Hastert, Roy Moore and, of course, the Turd Man himself! Oh, lest we forget, your best bud, Matt Gaetz, is still under investigation for possible sex-trafficking of female minors. Must be tough getting dates at that old age! See, that’s what happens, whacko, when you don’t wear your tinfoil hat against those vicious Jewish space lasers: brain fried! Kevin Hanley

Unelectable

Barnegat, N.J.: To Voicer Peter Giunta: Dear MAGA mutt, your criminal, rapist, sexual deviant, pathological adulterer and liar did tell more than 60 lies in 90 minutes. What a guy. The MAGA Orange Turd caused the deaths of more than 1 million Americans due to COVID. You must be so proud of him! You have to be demented to have any thoughts of a convicted felon as president. And by the way, women by the millions will not vote Republican in this election, and we all know that more women than men vote. P.S.: Trump never had a stock market like President Biden does. Lynda Spurdis

What a circus

Brooklyn: G.R.I.F.T. — Grand Republican Institutions Forsake Truth. See the rolling spectacle starring Don the Con. He cries, he lies. Tell them anything. Get your hats, t-shirts and flags. Join the carnival of hustlers. Democracy for sale! Ricardo Gittings

Barring bad news

Forest Hills: I noticed that your paper had enough space (one whole page) devoted to telling us that two famous drink-and-drive drunks are opening a bar in Scotland (“Great Scot! Justin, Tiger plan new bar,” July 6). That’s a long walk from here for a drink. Anyway, this is a presidential election year and your paper doesn’t seem to have the space to devote to something called Project 2025. It’s not too late — or are you planning to make this paper even more irrelevant? Therefore, are there any MAGA Trumpers out there who can write and explain the wonders of Project 2025? Carol Miles

Patriotic broadcast

Bayside: To Voicer Chris Matthew Sciabarra: You should have watched PBS Channel 13, the Fourth of July from the capital. Great songs we all should be singing. American songs! Great show! Trump must have had something to do with it! Theresa Polese

Repeat until true

Kearny, N.J.: We keep hearing negative propaganda about Biden’s mental capability, which is not factual but rumor — and like all rumor, if heard often enough, people will begin to believe it! Joseph F. Catrambone

Economic despair

New Rochelle, N.Y.: Enough is enough! You jerks in the Democratic Party have played your game long enough. May you all realize all the young, poor kids who go to bed hungry every night because of Biden’s dumb policies. Wake up and see the crying shame. Dom Mastropolo

Be kind

Tinton Falls, N.J.: To Voicer Mel Moskowitz: I dream of a world where kindness is the norm every day. I’m 76 and have two beautiful daughters, 10 beautiful grandchildren and one beautiful great-grandchild. None of us are down here very long, so why can’t kindness be the norm? All I want is for my family to also reach 76. Thank you, Mel. Tom E. Parker

New threads

Staten Island: I am a devout Mets fan, but this new uniform is dull, drab, dreary, dank, dismal, flat, cloudy, lifeless — duh! Andy La Barca

Batted down

Yonkers: Just got through watching the Mets getting beat by seven home runs. I was wondering if their pitchers went on the disabled list for whiplash after watching those shots go out. Warren Isaacs

Zap ’em

Brooklyn: Stun guns should be legalized in NYC because citizens need to defend themselves. Making stun guns illegal is a violation of the Second Amendment. They are legal in 47 states and were made legal in 2019 in New York, but when Gov. Hochul took over she banned them again, even though the only ones that were legal were low-voltage. Right now, possession of a stun gun in NYC is a class A misdemeanor. Assemblyman Alec Brook-Krasny is a fake Republican who opposes the legalization of stun guns yet opposes any gun control. Victor Malyar

Recruitment drive

Yorktown Heights, N.Y.: We need more lifeguards. What about extra credit for high school and college students who participate? Give athletes time off in the summer months to work as lifeguards. This should add to their sports credits and be considered community service. Recruit able-bodied adults from ages 18 to 65. Recruit at exercise clubs, pools, beaches, hotels, schools, colleges, YMCAs and anywhere else one can think of. They should be paid well, more than minimum wage. After all, they may save a life.
