Record-Courier journalists finalists for 10 APME awards

The Record-Courier and its journalists have been named finalists for 10 awards in the annual Ohio Associated Press Media Editors contest.

The competition honors the best print and broadcast journalism throughout the state. The contest featured news and sports stories, features, editorials, columns, graphics and photos from 2023.

The Record-Courier competes in Division III in the contest, which also includes newspapers such as

Finalists were announced Monday. Winners will be announced July 21 at an awards ceremony in Columbus.

The following staff members are being honored:

Best Video – Two nominations for Lisa Scalfaro, for “Mika” and “Happy Trails Open House.”

Best Photo Story – Lisa Scalfaro, for “For the Birds.”

Best Enterprise Reporting – Diane Smith, for “For the Birds.”

Best Photographer – Lisa Scalfaro

Best Sports Feature Writer – Jonah Rosenblum

Best Feature Photo – Lisa Scalfaro, for “After the Storm.”

Best Sports Writer – Jonah Rosenblum

Best Public Service – Jeff Saunders, for “Overdose Awareness.”

Best Spot News Coverage – Jeff Saunders, for “146 dead dogs.”

The APME awards come on the heels of two honors Record-Courier journalists received from the Cleveland Press Club. Smith took third place in Breaking News for "Dogs found dead." And, Scalfaro took third place in the feature photograph category for an image titled "Damage meditation."
